Ropes Course Team Building

A Ropes Course is a series of outdoor physical challenges presented to groups in order to provide an opportunity for the group to observe their own behavior. They will gain insight as to how effectively they interact with one another and to make changes when necessary.

PROGRAM FEATURES

  • Challenges are also known as “elements”, “simulations”, or “initiatives”.
  • Challenges are constructed with cables, ropes, logs, and/or other props attached to upright poles or trees.
  • These initiatives range in height from ground level to 50 feet. To insure physical, emotional, and social safety, and to maximize the learning process, the initiatives are sequenced and the “Challenge by Choice” philosophy is always followed.
  • All initiatives are presented in three phases:
    • The briefing phase: a description of the parameters for the challenge and the specific safety rules for that challenge,
    • The activity phase: the group is responsible for defining the problem, developing a plan, problem solving, brainstorming for solutions, and implementing their plan.
    • The debriefing phase: a discussion of the outcome of the activity phase. During the debriefing the participants are asked to discuss how their behavior during the challenge is similar to them (individually and as a team) in terms of work behavior.
  • Once the group is familiar with the format of the training and they begin to understand some of their own behavior, they are then asked to establish goals for the remainder of the training, both at the individual level and at the group level.
